Williams has performed in many feature films since 1980. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. He has also won three Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and three Grammy Awards.

Sheriff Ray Owens (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a man who has resigned himself to a life of fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction, Arizona, after leaving his LAPD post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with failure and defeat after his partner was crippled and his team decimated. The crimes experienced in Sommerton range from the Mayor parking his red Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in the fire lane and vintage arms collector Lewis Dinkum (Johnny Knoxville) firing off guns at slabs of meat with the deputies. One night, international drug lord Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega) makes a daring escape from FBI custody in Las Vegas and speeds off in a modified Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1, taking Agent Ellen Richards (Génesis Rodríguez) as his hostage as he races southbound toward Mexico at speeds over 200 mph. Agent John Bannister (Forrest Whitaker) has a blockade set up in Bullhead City, Arizona, but Cortez's men mow down the police officers on site and clear the road for him to continue his getaway. Cortez also uses his extraordinary driving skills to immobilize two SWAT vehicles headed toward Summerton Junction. Before flying to Arizona, Agent Bannister has his team do a financial background check on all agents involved to find out how Cortez managed to escape so easily.

Sometime past 4:30 in the morning, Owens dispatches deputies Jerry Bailey (Zach Gilford) and Sarah Torrance (Jaimie Alexander) to visit the residence of the local farmer Parsons (Harry Dean Stanton), who has suddenly missed his usual milk delivery at the diner. After discovering that Parsons has been murdered, the deputies follow a trail of tire tracks that lead them to Cortez's henchman Thomas Burrell (Peter Stormare) and his mercenary cutthroats, who are planting a mobile assault bridge across the canyon that marks the U.S./Mexico border. Bailey is fatally shot in the middle of a shootout between the deputies and the thugs before Owens rushes in to bring his officers back to his precinct. Shortly after being notified by Agent Bannister of Cortez's presence, Owens gathers Torrance and senior Deputy Mike "Figgy" Figuerola (Luis Guzmán). He also deputizes jailed local Frank Martinez (Rodrigo Santoro), a former Marine with PTSD who developed a streak of never finishing what he started. Because Bailey was his friend, Martinez insists that he will not falter. Finally, Owens recruits Dinkum to protect their town. Dinkum agrees only if he becomes a deputy and if he keeps the gun Owens had confiscated earlier.

At 7:10 a.m., Owens and his deputies have the town's main road barricaded with cars when Burrell and his men arrive, prompting a lengthy firefight. Armed only with a Tommy Gun, Figuerola holds off the thugs before being injured by a sniper. Owens and Dinkum mow down a majority of the thugs with a Vickers machine gun dubbed "Nazi-Killer" mounted on the back of a school bus with Martinez providing cover fire, while Torrance snipes several gunmen on the rooftops. After Owens kills Burrell, Cortez's Corvette eventually arrives in town, veering past the barricade as Owens and the deputies shoot at it. Cortez ejects Agent Richards from the car before speeding through a corn field. Suddenly, he encounters the Mayor's Camaro commandeered by Owens before both cars collide with a tractor. A dazed Cortez continues his escape on foot, but Owens meets him at the bridge. Owens ignores Cortez's bribe offers before both men wrestle each other. Despite sustaining slashes and stab wounds from Cortez's push dagger, Owens defeats the drug lord and handcuffs him before dragging him back into town with the battered Camaro. Agent Bannister arrives to take Cortez back into custody and arrests Agent Richards for taking the drug lord's bribe and aiding in his escape. Deputies Figuerola and Dinkum are taken to the hospital to be treated for their wounds. Martinez turns in the deputy's badge, Bailey's badge, that Owens had given him earlier. Owens tells him to keep it, as he's earned it. As the Mayor sees what is left of his Camaro, Owens warns him about parking in the fire lane before he, Torrance and Martinez walk into the diner.

Later, at a bar, Blanchard is murdered by Keegan (Jason Momoa), who also attempts to kill Bobo, but fails.

Washington D.C. Detective Taylor Kwon (Sung Kang) arrives in New Orleans to investigate Greely's death and meets Lieutenant Lebreton, who informs him Lola confirmed Greely was assassinated. Kwon goes to the morgue, and, after seeing Blanchard's body and finding out who he is, he deduces that Blanchard and Bobo killed Greely. Meanwhile, Keegan meets with his employer, Robert Morel (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), and Morel's lawyer Marcus Baptiste (Christian Slater). Baptiste reveals that Greely tried to blackmail Morel, and provided local mobster Baby Jack (Douglas M. Griffin) with a file detailing Morel's illegal operations. Keegan later kills Baby Jack and his men and retrieves the file.

Kwon meets Bobo in a bar and informs him that he knows Bobo and Blanchard killed Greely. Bobo leaves, and when Kwon tries to follow him, he is attacked by corrupt cops who were ordered by Morel to prevent Kwon from further investigating about Greely. Bobo rescues Kwon and takes him to a tattoo parlor, where Bobo's daughter, Lisa (Sarah Shahi), treats Kwon's wounds. They later go to a massage parlor where Bobo interrogates Ronnie Earl (Brian Van Holt), the middleman who hired Bobo and Blanchard on Morel's behalf. Ronnie Earl tries to kill Bobo, but Bobo manages to kill him, although his gun jams. Bobo later confronts Kwon, who admits to having tampered with Bobo's gun, nearly causing his death. Bobo and Kwon agree to work together.

Bobo and Kwon kidnap Baptiste and take him to Bobo's house, where he is forced to give them a flash drive detailing Morel's plans to acquire housing projects and demolish them to build office buildings and reveals Keegan is an ex-mercenary hired to be Morel's enforcer. Afterwards, Bobo shoots him in the head. Keegan and his men trace Baptiste's cellphone to Bobo's house, but Bobo and Kwon are able to escape and detonate a bomb, killing Keegan's men. Keegan then becomes obsessed with killing Bobo.

Kwon meets with Lieutenant Lebreton to ask for his help, but Lebreton tries to kill him, as he is also on Morel's payroll, but Bobo kills him and saves Kwon. Meanwhile, Keegan learns about Lisa and kidnaps her. Morel then calls Bobo and offers to trade Lisa for the flash drive. Bobo agrees, and meets with Morel in an abandoned warehouse, where he delivers the flash drive to him and rescues Lisa, while Kwon infiltrates the building to arrest Morel. Keegan becomes furious when Bobo is allowed to leave and kills Morel and his men before going after Bobo.

Keegan confronts Bobo and they have an axe fight, which ends with Bobo slashing Keegan's throat with Blanchard's knife, followed by Kwon shooting Keegan in the head. Kwon retrieves the flash drive and Bobo shoots him in the shoulder to make it appear as if Kwon failed to capture him. Lisa decides to stay with Kwon, with whom she initiates a romantic relationship, and Bobo leaves. He later meets Kwon at a bar, where Kwon tells him he did not mention Bobo's existence to the police this time, but if Bobo continues in the business, Kwon will take him down. Bobo welcomes him to try and drives off into the night.

Fast forward two months... The situation has not changed, and the State Department has brought in the services of the CIA, both to free the hostages and extricate the six in hiding. Tony Mendez with the CIA is the lead consultant on the six. Although many, in his mind, implausible plans are hatched to extricate the six, Tony eventually comes up with what some others believe is an implausible plan: have the six, under Canadian passports, pretend to be a film crew in Iran scouting for locations, with Tony part of that film crew to lead the six out himself. Four years after the outbreak of the T-virus, the Alice clones (Milla Jovovich) attempt to kill Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) at his base in Tokyo. Wesker escapes and destroys the base, killing all of the clones. Alice is aboard Wesker's aircraft, though he is able to strip her of her powers before the aircraft crashes. Wesker is seemingly killed in the crash.

Six months later, Alice travels to North America in an airplane following emergency broadcasts from a safe haven known as Arcadia in Alaska. Alice is attacked by Claire Redfield (Ali Larter); after the attack, Alice destroys the device controlling Claire (later revealed to have been placed on her by Umbrella) and finds out that Claire has lost all of her memory. The two travel to the ruins of Los Angeles in a Yak-52 plane, where they find a group of survivors living in a prison surrounded by zombies. Luther West (Boris Kodjoe), leads the small band which includes Wendell (Fulvio Cecere), Crystal Waters (Kacey Barnfield), Bennett (Kim Coates) and Kim Yong (Norman Yeung), Angel Ortiz (Sergio Peris-Mencheta), and Chris Redfield (Wentworth Miller), who is a prisoner under lockdown in the facility.

With their help, Alice lands her plane on the roof of the prison and learns that Arcadia is not a fixed place but actually a cargo tanker traveling along the coast. Alice and the survivors decide to find an alternate means to make it to the Arcadia. Chris reveals that he is the brother of Claire. He insists that he is not a prisoner but actually a soldier who fell victim to a cruel joke by some escaped prisoners and claims that he knows an alternate route. While in the shower, Alice is attacked by a group of Majini zombies that managed to tunnel into the prison. Wendell, who was trying to peep on Alice, is killed by the zombies. Alice, seeing as they are out of options, decides to set Chris free and leave the prison.

Chris reveals that the prison keeps an armored car that can be used to escape. However, a giant axe-wielding monster begins the process of breaking down the gate outside. To overcome the problems, Alice, Chris and Crystal go deeper into the prison to retrieve additional guns from the armory; Luther and Claire attempt to reinforce the gate to keep the Axeman and other zombies at bay, As Alice, Chris and Crystal make it to the armory, zombies swarm them, overpowering and devouring Crystal. Angel informs Bennett and Yong that the vehicle is missing its engine and it would take a week to fix. Panicking, Bennett shoots Angel, abandons Yong, and escapes with Alice's airplane. Below, the Axeman finally breaks down the gate, allowing the zombies outside to enter the facility. With no other choice, the group decides to use the zombie-dug tunnels to escape into the sewers. Yong is suddenly cut in half by the Axeman, whom Alice and Claire then defeat. The two meet back up with Chris at the end of the sewers but they lose Luther to a zombie who drags him back into the sewers.

Alice and the Redfields commandeer a boat and board the Arcadia, finding it functional but seemingly abandoned. Claire suddenly regains her memory, and reveals that Arcadia was an Umbrella trap designed to kidnap survivors to be used as test subjects. The trio begin releasing survivors, among them K-Mart (Spencer Locke). As Alice goes deeper in the ship, she finds Wesker, revived by the T-virus and now with incredible powers, though he is constantly at war with the T-virus for control of his body. In order to pacify it, Wesker regularly eats fresh human DNA. He hopes to permanently gain control of the virus by consuming Alice, the only individual to bond successfully with the T-virus on a cellular level.

Chris and Claire arrive and attack Wesker while Alice battles two dogs and Bennett, who has allied himself with Wesker. Wesker easily overpowers Chris and Claire, but Alice is able to defeat both Bennett and Wesker with help from K-Mart. While leaving, they lock Bennett in the room with Wesker's corpse, but Wesker consumes Bennett and escapes in an aircraft. He activates a bomb on the Arcadia in an attempt to destroy the ship but Alice had hidden the bomb aboard his plane instead, which explodes. Unbeknownst to them, a figure parachutes away from the explosion, while Luther emerges from the sewers, battered but alive. Alice resolves to turn the Arcadia into a real safe haven and broadcasts its message for any other survivors. Claire, Chris, K-Mart, and Alice soon see an approaching Umbrella assault helicopter squadron. In one of the helicopters, Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), who went missing after Resident Evil: Apocalypse, is dictating the attack wearing the same mind control device used on Claire.

The film begins with Alice (Milla Jovovich) apparently waking up at the mansion, just like the beginning of the first Resident Evil. Alice defeats the usual obstacles, including the laser room, though she is eventually killed by a machine gun. Her body is taken outside and dumped into a pit. She is then revealed to be a clone of the original Alice, and the pit is then shown to be filled with hundreds of similar clones. The camera zooms out from the facility's camouflaged entrance, made to look like a shack (the rest of the facility is underground). The shack is surrounded by a high fence and hundreds of zombies are seen trying to get in the facility, deep in the desert.

Five years after the T-virus escaped Raccoon City, it has spread around the world. As organisms are infected, the environment becomes destroyed. Umbrella has placed facilities underground to prevent the human survivors from finding out about Umbrella.

Meanwhile, the original Alice wanders the desert wastelands of the Southwestern U.S.. She has separated from the rest of her group for their own protection, as the Umbrella is trying to track her down and she is afraid that they would kill anyone linked to Alice. She searches for supplies and travels on a motorcycle and wearing a slingshot for protection, and she is carrying a diary she found.

In the Umbrella facility, Dr. Sam Isaacs considers Alice's re-capture a top priority since she has the ability to bond with the T-Virus. He tries to persuade the Umbrella board that he can use her blood to develop a permanent cure, as well as tame the infected. The new Umbrella chairman Albert Wesker (Jason O'Mara) refuses the re-capture, and instead orders Isaacs to use the clones to create a cure, with no authorization to Alice's recapture until they are sure of her location and ability to bond and capture her.

Meanwhile, Claire Redfield's (Ali Larter) convoy, which includes the Raccoon City survivors Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) and L.J. (Mike Epps), along with new survivors K-Mart (Spencer Locke), Mikey (Christopher Egan), Chase (Linden Ashby) and Nurse Betty (Ashanti Douglas) along with others, travel cross country, looking for medical supplies, food, water, and gas, as well as a permanent shelter.

One day, in a deserted town, while searching a motel for supplies, L.J. is bitten, but keeps it a secret. The next morning, the convoy is attacked by infected crows, who were feeding on the infected flesh. The crows almost overpower the convoy, killing Nurse Betty and taking out the flamethrower operator, causing the weapon to careen out of control. Alice appears and saves Carlos and others from a fiery death. She uses her psionic powers to cover the sky with a blanket of fire, killing the crows. Alice is introduced to Claire, and gives her a diary she found. The book claims of a "safe zone" in Alaska. Alice and Carlos convince Claire to take her convoy to Alaska. They agree to go to Las Vegas to search for supplies for their trip to Alaska.

Meanwhile, in the facility, Dr. Isaacs' attempts to domesticate the infected have led to a new zombie breed. Wesker's security officer, Captain Slater (Matthew Marsden), is adamant about Isaacs not disregarding Umbrella's regulations. Slater does admit that the "super zombies" (the Crimson Heads) would be useful, but reiterates that Isaacs is out of control, and he is losing his mind trying to re-capture Alice.

Umbrella triangulates Alice's location based on her psionic abilities. Dr. Isaacs has a crate of his new zombies sent to ambush the convoy, against Wesker's specific orders. Most of the convoy, including Chase and Mikey, are killed in the ambush and Carlos is infected by L.J as he turns. Umbrella tries to shut Alice down remotely, but she breaks free from their programming and continues to fight. She finds and kills the Umbrella team at the scene and Isaacs becomes infected as he flees. Alice and K-Mart use Isaacs' computer to track the helicopter's flight path, leading to Umbrella's underground location.

The convoy goes to the site, which is surrounded by zombies. Carlos sacrifices himself by plowing his truck into the zombie mob and blowing them all up, giving Alice and Claire time to load survivors into the helicopter. Alice decides to stay behind. Ordered by Wesker to liquidate Isaacs, Slater finds him locked in his lab, injecting himself with massive doses of Anti-Virus in an attempt to counteract the infection, which makes him to mutate from overdosing the Anti-Virus. Slater shoots Dr. Isaacs, triggering his mutation into a Tyrant. Isaacs kills all the facility employees, but the base's AI manages to temporarily lock him in the lower levels.

Entering the facility, Alice meets a holograph of the Red Queen's sister AI, the White Queen (Madeline Carroll). The White Queen informs Alice that her blood is the cure to the T-Virus and puts the facility at her disposal to develop a cure. She then tells Alice about Dr. Isaacs. Alice agrees to deal with him. On her way to the lab's lower levels, Alice discovers one of her clones, still in development. The clone awakens, but seems to die from premature exposure. During an intense battle between Isaacs and Alice, they find themselves in a replica of the Hive's laser corridor. The grid activates and slices Isaacs into cubes. Just as Alice is about to meet the same fate, the system is deactivated by her clone, which has inexplicably revived. Meanwhile, Claire has left with survivors in the helicopter, leaving for Alaska.

Later, in Tokyo, Japan, Wesker informs the rest of the Umbrella board that the North American facility has been lost, and declared unsafe, and he will now control everything from Japan. Alice's hologram makes an appearance, declaring that she is coming for him and Umbrella now. Standing beside her clone, Alice looks out onto the hundreds of pods containing her developing clones, as the scene blacks out.

Thirteen hours after the initial T-virus outbreak in The Hive, the Umbrella Corporation sends in a research team to re-open the complex. The team is slaughtered by zombies and Lickers. Since the Hive's entrance is not sealed, Umbrella establishes a security perimeter around Raccoon City and also evacuates the Umbrella scientists in the Raccoon City.

After surviving The Hive, Alice was recovered by Umbrella and experimented on. She now has superhuman strength, speed and agility. Waking up in an empty hospital, she wanders outside to find the virus has escaped and the city is a ghost town. She arms herself with a shotgun from a police car and starts walking. Meanwhile, she is disturbed by a man who keeps showing up in her visions, and who was experimenting on her.

While Umbrella is evacuating civilians at the last open bridge, police officer Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory) confers with Sergeant Peyton Welles. The T-virus begins to affect citizens at the checkpoint, and Peyton is bitten. Umbrella supervisor Timothy Cain (Thomas Kretschmann) seals the exit and orders his soldiers to fire over the crowd's heads, scaring them back into the city. Elsewhere, Carlos Olivera (Oded Fehr) and other Umbrella soldiers link up with Special Tactics And Rescue Squad (STARS) units to defend against an onslaught of zombies in the city. Their positions were overrun by zombies, causing Carlos and his team to retreat with a bitten Yuri, who turns into a zombie and infects Carlos before being killed. Jill, Peyton and a news reporter named Terri Morales (Sandrine Holt) lock themselves in a church, which turns out to be full of Lickers; they are saved at the last minute by the heavily armed Alice.

Umbrella dispatches their Nemesis program to kill all remaining STARS operatives, and plan to sanitize Raccoon City using a nuclear weapon. When Nemesis encounters L.J. (Mike Epps) a surviving citizen, and members of STARS, they open fire. He guns the STARS down but spares L.J.'s life when he drops his weapons. Dr. Charles Ashford (Jared Harris), an Umbrella scientist and creator of the T-virus, has refused extraction until he has located and rescued his daughter Angela (Sophie Vavasseur), and soon figures out she is hiding out in her school dormitory. He contacts Alice and the other survivors through the public telephone system, and offers to arrange their evacuation in exchange for rescuing Angela. Alice is separated from the group when Nemesis appears and kills Peyton. Jill and Terri make it to the school, picking up L.J. on the way, and encounter Carlos and Nicholai, acting on the same offer. After encounters with zombie dogs and infected children who kill Nicholai and Terri, Alice saves the group again and they find Angela in the school. She reveals that she was injected with T-virus; Dr. Ashford created the T-virus to remedy her illness, but he also created the anti-virus because of the T-virus's potential for mutations. Alice reveals she was injected as well. She injects Carlos with the anti-virus to save him.

Dr. Ashford gives Alice the location of the extraction point at the City Hall, where the helicopter waits, but after he talks with her he is confronted by Major Cain. The group makes it to the point, but are cornered by Major Cain, who has caught wind of Dr. Ashford's intentions and is also holding him prisoner. All but Alice are restrained, and seconds later Nemesis appears. Major Cain commands Alice to fight Nemesis. Alice refuses, until Dr. Ashford is shot. She relents and fights him, impaling him on a pole. Defeating Nemesis, she realizes he is Matt Addison.

Her stand rekindles a trace of Nemesis's former humanity and they join forces and attack the Umbrella forces. Nemesis is killed when he blasts an attacking helicopter and it crashes on him. They escape in the helicopter. Alice throws Major Cain out of the helicopter. He shoots a few infected people, but ultimately is overcome. The nuclear missile detonates over the center of Raccoon City, destroying it completely. Despite escaping the immediate area, the helicopter is caught in the blast wave and crashes. As the helicopter falls, a metal pole comes loose and is flung towards Angela. Alice moves in front of Angela and is impaled.

Some hours after the explosion, Umbrella employees locate the helicopter's crash site, deep in the Arklay Mountains. There, they find Alice's body, badly burned. The others are nowhere to be found. Umbrella employees take her body and leave the crash site, with the burned Raccoon City in the background. The media shows that Terri's footage has been shown to the press, saying that Umbrella released the zombies and the T-virus. Umbrella denies this, arguing that it is a hoax. Umbrella promotes a fake story about a nuclear power plant explosion near the city. The media announce that Jill and Carlos are wanted by the police for questioning.

Three weeks later, in the midwest Umbrella research facility, Alice awakens in a water tank. Led by Umbrella scientist Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen), the doctors begin questioning her. At first, she appears to have no memory, but soon she recalls events from Raccoon City and before. She realizes that the doctor who appeared in her visions is Dr. Isaacs. She attacks him, and fights her way out of the facility. She makes her way outside only to be surrounded by more Umbrella guards holding her at gunpoint. Suddenly, Jill, Carlos, Angela, and L.J. pull up, disguised as Umbrella employees. Carlos shows the guards a written order placing her in his custody.

Alice enters the vehicle, and as they drive away, Angela asks her if she is alright. She doesn't respond, and Dr. Isaacs is shown saying, "Let them go," and then "Program Alice Activated." A close-up of her eye shows a flashing Umbrella logo.
